February 24, 2007

Today marked the first ever Poker Run held by the Milan All Weather Riders Snowmobile Club. All proceeds of the poker run (over $1,000!) were donated to the Michael Blanchette Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will benefit a local high school graduate pursuing a four-year degree in civil engineering.

The Club truly appreciates all who contributed to the event in honor of ‘Mikey’ who was a great friend and snowmobile enthusiast.  Those who were instrumental in the success of this fundraiser include: Mike’s friends, the Milan All Weather Riders, Alpine Machine Inc., Seventh Street Graphics, the Androscoggin Valley Cancer Fund and Gorham High School. We ask the community to bless those that generously donated prizes and giveaways for the event – Bob’s Variety, Alpine Machine Inc., Motorcycle Snowmobile Service of Gorham, Gallus & Green Realtors, Androscoggin Valley Appraisal Assoc., Matt Perkins, Jericho Motorsports, Don Laroche, Sherwin Williams, Berlin Mills Variety, Woodlands Credit Union, the New Milan General Store, the Blanchette family; and Motion Industries who gave a straight donation to the scholarship fund.

Riders came from all over New England to participate. Lucky winners with the 10 best hands were Susan Albert, Lionel Caron, Jackie Marois, Brian Croteau, Leo Roy, June Marois, Doug Shannon, Dwight Armstrong, Larry Lombardi and Leo Long. Many more won gift certificates, apparel and grab bags.

The Poker Run culminated with the annual All Weather Riders cookout at Success Pond. Great thanks go to Bobby Marois who at the last minute lent his camp for the festivities, as the pond was unexpectedly slushy!  The Club looks forward to repeating Mike’s Scholarship Poker Run and annual Club cookout as a bigger and better event in 2008. We’re already in the planning stages!....Happy trails to you.
